Black Hat Tactics Emerge

Early ranking systems rewarded volume over quality. That created strong incentives to game the system. Common ¡°black hat¡± tactics included:

  • Keyword stuffing: Repeating target keywords dozens of times, sometimes in invisible text that matched the page background.
  • Meta tag abuse: Cramming unrelated, high-traffic terms into meta keyword tags that users never saw.

The AI Revolution: SGE, AI Overviews, and AI Mode (2023¨C2026)

The AI revolution in search began in May 2023, when Google introduced the Search Generative Experience (SGE), an AI feature that placed a synthesized answer at the top of results, drawing from multiple sources. It was the biggest shift in SEO since Panda. In May 2024, Google renamed it AI Overviews and rolled it out to all U.S. users.

By early 2026, AI Overviews appeared in roughly , and they show up far more often for informational and question-based queries. Ranking on page one no longer guarantees traffic. To show up now, brands have to be cited inside AI Overviews, not just ranked beneath them.
